Tommy's funds research into the causes of pregnancy complications and loss, and provides information to empower parents to have a healthy pregnancy. We believe it is unacceptable that 1 in 4 women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth.

Facts about our job

  • From 2012 to 2017, Tommy’s research on stillbirth at our Manchester centre has helped decrease the average stillbirth rate by 19% in St. Mary’s Hospital [2]. This is equivalent to 12 fewer babies dying every year.
  • Over ten years, Tommy’s prematurity clinic in London has reduced premature birth both locally and regionally by more than 10%, against a national and international rise in premature birth. Despite increasing referrals of high risk women, we are pleased to report a 21% reduction in preterm births at St Thomas’ Hospital in the last year.
  • Edinburgh Tommy’s Centre for Maternal and Fetal Health focuses on the impact of obesity in pregnancy, as well as other stressors such as depression and inflammation. We aim to help women with severe obesity to have safe and healthy pregnancies. In 2017, women attending the Tommy’s clinic in Edinburgh were an astounding 8 times less likely to have a stillbirth than women attending clinics not specialised in helping obese women.

Pregnancy loss is devastating. Tommy’s was started by two obstetricians who were frustrated with the scale of pregnancy loss in the UK.

1 in 4 women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth.

Each day:

  • 9 babies are still born
  • 684 babies are miscarried
  • 164 babies are born preterm

This is unacceptable.

We exist because there is a desperate need for funding into maternal and fetal research.

When a parent is told their baby has died in pregnancy or birth, or their baby is born too soon, they are often also told that the medical teams do not know why it happened. This is because the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth are not yet understood.

“Jack was on born on August 30 2011 by emergency caesarean section at 27 weeks. He was tiny and beautiful. Our little boy was in intensive care for three days but he was just too sick to survive… I have no answers as to why we suffered this terrible loss and we struggle with not knowing.”

Amy, Tommy’s supporter.

Tommy’s is dedicated to finding answers and finding treatments to prevent these deaths happening. We want to make pregnancy safer. We fund four maternal and fetal research centres across the UK that look at finding causes and ways of preventing these untimely deaths.

Our target is to halve the number of babies that die during pregnancy or birth by 2030.
