Portage is an approach to working with disabled children which supports their physical, social and cognitive development, as well as their overall well-being. These children often have a variety of challenging needs; we work with carers, parents and institutions in Russia (and neighbouring countries) to teach ‘Portage’ to key care givers.

Facts about our job

  • We have introduced Portage to 10 children’s homes and 6 community centres supporting countless families, meaning we’ve reached over 500 children!
  • Disability in the countries we work in is often seen as “one size fits all”. Without our work, children with Autism, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy are all seen as just “disabled”, and treated (dismissed) in the same way.
  • It costs us £2000 to run a “Train the Trainer” session and mentor them thereafter. These sessions are vital in getting more people understanding Portage and enabling them to teach others how to practice it.

Life in Russia (and neighbouring countries) for a child with any sort of disability (and their family) can be bleak.

There is still a huge stigma around disability, with many believing that disability automatically means incapacity, a lack of intellect and an inability to love or connect with others – when nothing could be further from the truth!

Many of these children will end up in institutions; sterile environments where they get no affection and little human contact. A place where staff are afraid to play with them or hold them in case they “break”. A place where they get palliative care because they are not expected to live long.

However, our work means that more children than ever now get a chance at a future and to fulfill their potential because we’ve been able to introduce Portage into their lives.

Portage is free and offered routinely across the UK, however that is sadly not the case elsewhere. Your donations help us do more of our life-changing work and teach more care-givers to see the joy in being able to help disabled children lead a happy life.
